You should have hdc=ide-scsi in your grub menu.lst entries or in the
append="" statements in lilo.conf (then run lilo) for scsi emulation
to work at boot. Then, as root, you can run cdrecord --scanbus to
detect the drive's connection. GCombust has detection buttons and K3b
seems to do this automatically, to be sure the drive is detected and
ready to use. I use GCombust.
Should the append line in lilo.conf be before or after the
append="devfs=mount quiet"?
The append="" statement is a list of space-separated kernel commands
between the "" marks. Order, afaik, is not important. So, you would
edit lilo.conf to show something like append="devfs=mount quiet
hdc=ide-scsi" (take out the quiet if you want to see the boot messages),
save, and run lilo. Another option might be to open Mandrake Control
Center and look at Hardware > Hardware List or, even, mount points to
see if a configuration option is available. I have not had to configure
hardware in a long time, so don't know what exists here but some
components have configuration options. One other thing that comes to
mind is that harddrake will detect new hardware and configure it for you
at boot. I just noticed that it was not installed during my 9.0 install
(that seems to have been done in the past). You could install it with
urpmi harddrake then, in Mandrake Control Center > System > Services,
check to see that it is enabled to start at boot, reboot, and see if it
handles the cd-writer. Disabling startup at boot of harddrake or any
other non-vital service is always an option if it gives you trouble.
That can be done with chkconfig hardrake off, for instance, in failsafe
