Check the archives.. but I do seem to remember that if you are willing to put up with the slower access times. (depending on what you do you might not even notice that it's slower.) you can do an append="nodma" at boot and the WD drives suddenly start to work nicer. Since I remember Civilme saying something about DMA being the root of the problem with WD drives.
