OK, what's the secret code to find out what java version is installed?

How about:

       java -version

Minor progress only, as the result is quite unexpected and incomplete.
Mozilla problems are causing people to recommend upgrading java from
v1.3 to v1.4. In 9.0, 'java -version' and 'java -fullversion' both
report version 1.1, just-in-time v3 version 1.0.7; and neither report
which rpm is responsible for its presence.

rpm -qf `which java`
kaffe-1.0.7-1mdk

More progress, but still not there. Mozilla's developers want v1.4, and
this kaffe appears to be v1.1. Where & how do I make v1.4 available to
Mozilla?

you can also download the .xpi file here that will install the plugins
right to Mozilla without having to go to all the trouble of the JRE package.
