If I would dare to jump in (I apologize if this is off, as I have not gotten the chance to read the original FAQ, thus to understand what's beeing suggested there) - but as far as my experience goes, you do not want to combine on the same controller high speed devices (hard drives), and lower speed ones (cd-roms, zip drives, etc.) - thus having the zip on its own controller, separated from the hard drives.
