Continue to be unable to assign a lost name to a working user id. Name
was lost during samba and various other set-ups. Have attempted changing
all the password files in /etc and all the other files and then using
pmconv (pwconv...I can't remember) command. Have attempted to use
Linconf and Mandrake control center to remedy this. Have gone to command
line using useradd. Occasionally get an error like "ptmp or gtmp exists"
Have deleted these files assuming they would be recreated.
Alas nothing works. I need to assign a name because all of the suid
programs fail to work. This user can open a terminal and use su.But the
suid programs must require a name assigned to this id. This user is
listed in graphical login and the directories can be accessed through
samba etc... But open a terminal and it complains of no name or try to
run a higher permission program and it grinds to a halt.

I really don't want to delete this user and then have to rebuild all of
their config and personal stuff.

Any further ideas?

Thanks,
Clif
