I do recall seeing, and experiencing, this problem.  The initscript
should make this socket file itself, but I don't remember why it
doesn't.

IIRC, a reboot will clear this up after you first try to start MySQL. 
I'm not 100% positive on this, but I'm pretty sure that's all I had to
do to get it working.

Please let us know if that works.

The other alternative is to go http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/ and
do a search for, maybe "bind on unix socket" or "mysqld startup
problem" or something and see if the solution is in the archives
somewhere.
