I do recall seeing, and experiencing, this problem. The initscript should make this socket file itself, but I don't remember why it doesn't. IIRC, a reboot will clear this up after you first try to start MySQL. I'm not 100% positive on this, but I'm pretty sure that's all I had to do to get it working. Please let us know if that works.
