Try pilot-xfer --port /dev/ttyUSB1 --backup ~/visor/. This should
backup your palm. I notice in your last note that the port is
/dev/pilot, and it should be /dev/ttyUSB1

But I am having the same problems trying to sync my Handspring visor.
And in my case pilot-xfer works fine.

If yours does not, try watching kernel messages as you sync,
tail -f /var/log/messages.

Good luck.

On the side of the software box, in the 'System Requirements' section,
it said 'Requires Windows 95 or better'. So I installed Linux and
lived
happily ever after.
