It depends. Are you passing "quiet" to the new kernel? If so, you're
hiding all the normal kernel dmesg output. Try also passing "debug" to
the kernel and you'll see what all is going on.

Most likely. The issue is that whatever modules you compiled were not
able to be used properly in whatever initrd you built because the
current depmod fails during install.

module-init-tools provides the tools to work for either kernel. I think
you also need to upgrade initscripts, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
