the -U is why... don't upgrade kernels install them with -i this will put everything in parallel. One thing you will need to do is change image=/boot/vmlinuz to image/boot/vmlinuz.2-x.x.x.xmdk where this matches the kernel for that lilo entry. Then do the same for initrd changing it specifically to the one you need rather than the symlink.
