Yes, but I can't remember that I bothered to worry about that in the
beginning. I tried a couple of fresh installations since I screwed up
the first one in other areas, too. but, I updated the kernel through
Mandrake Update the first time, but can't remember if I also downloaded
the source files for that kernel. Maybe not?

Thanks. I need to be reminded, anyway. :-)

See my reply to James Sparenberg for the lowdown on what was wrong and
how I resolved it. Compiling wasn't necessary and may have taken some
support for other devices away. Sometimes, thing go wrong for good
reasons. ;-)
