hi all, i wrote to this mailing list some time ago. i had this problem that i could not add a new harddisk to my system. the answer of the fellow below had me confident that my problem was solved.. temporarily i just replaced an existing harddisk with the new one. that worked okay. but now i want to replace one of my cd-roms with the new harddisk (as i tried in the beginning, when my problems started)
it seems, removing "hdc=ide-scsi" from lilo.conf doesn't quite do the trick. (i rerun lilo and rebooted of course) is there anything else that i have to switch for a harddisk to be accepted on a former scsi emulated cd-rom slot ? (ide bus) tnx & greetings, le stu On Thursday 24 Apr 2003 23:19, bascule wrote: > the lilo stanza is telling the kernel to use scsi emulation for the hard > disk which being ide not surprisingly confuses it, just copy lilo.conf to > lilo.conf.old or something, remove the refernce to hdc but leave the ref to > hdd if you want, i assume you have a line like: > append="hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" > make it > append="hdd=ide-scsi" > leave in also anything else that is already there of course > run (as root) > lilo > then reboot, the drive should be seen now, when done, rename the old lilo > back, run lilo again and reboot with the old cd drive back in > > bascule > > On Friday 25 Apr 2003 12:08 am, elPunishar wrote: > > yes i do indeed!! > > so the two cdroms are kinda hardlinked to hdc and hdd since the > > installation.. > > > > what is the "correct" way to handle this ? > > comment it from lilo.conf until i dont need the harddisk anymore and then > > uncomment it again ? > > do i have to expect problems with the cdroms afterwards because there was > > once a hd on hdc ? my only thought is: do you have any refences in lilo to hdc, ide-scsi for cdburning for example? bascule On Thursday 24 Apr 2003 11:13 pm, elPunishar wrote: > i'm trying to add a third IDE harddisk to my system. > on the second bus there were 2 cdroms during installation. i wanted to > temporarily switch one of the cdroms with the new harddisk. > no matter what i do, the device file for the harddisk will not get > created.. in control center hardware detection i can see hdc on the bus, > but the device file is missing. > i know how to correctly jumper a harddisk and i tried 2 different > harddisks, both of which work perfectly in another system. > > hope you can help me. > > greetings, > le stu
