for some reason it used /dev/hdd, but thats no prob.
cdrecord -scan bus is reporting correctly.
a few probs with gnome and nautilus reporting drives that ar'nt there,
but a thats a config issue.
I had a mail from the K3b maintainer
"

I've downloaded and tried to build it, but there's a prob with a link 
to libasound, 
locate says they are installed, so its a case of getting the rust off
the brain cells. You can get very lazy with modular kernels and RPMs.
