Why would a guy who's owned 2 comps for the last 10 years worry about
expansion.

As for security.  The firewall is basiclly setup to block ... period. 
on the individual boxes it's pretty much normal stuff nothing fancy. 
Avoiding the obvious holes in them. On the firewall an nmap scan shows
that the only "hole" is ssh.
