If you do not use NAT then your alternative is to have valid IP address for all the machines you have. There probably are a few programs out there that do not handle NAT well. But the cost involved in getting valid IP address and getting them on the network out weights the small portion of programs that will not handle it. I have cox cable and they only give you 3 address (which you pay extra after the first one). To go more you have to use Cox for work which costs about $100/month. Since I do have extra machines behind my linksys, I do pay the extra amount to cox (it's only fair for $6.95 extra a month).
