ok i bit the bullet. Thanks to lyvim and other people's comments, i am going with a 1312 combo dvd/cdrw, from toshiba. i ordered it from micro pro and hope it arrives soon. i'll update folks when i get it.
with shipping and a 50 pack of media it comes to a little over $113 - not bad.
