You might have to enable it in lilo during boot. Mine is off :-
append="devfs=mount hdb=ide-scsi acpi=off"

If I remove acpi=off from the above, it is "on." But this is on a desktop. You 
might need to add acpi=on in your /etc/lilo.conf
