Well, I've finally got it working again. The clue came when I as checking
something else, and saw a message "...can't locate module serial...".
searched and found a module named generic_serial and loaded that, now the
mouse works. Seems the problem was the serial port driver wasn't loaded...
Definitely going to re-build the kernel, and have the serial drivers
complied in.
