Forcing it to recognise that it is a Matrox card, not a SiS did the trick. I've done all the upgrades now. It seems unbelievable, but I couldn't get eth0 up either, and as soon as the video problem disappeard eth0 was fine! So you see I wouldn't have been able to update the libqt anyway!
