It was in text mode, which I expected. I have done it that way
before, but this time I couldn't edit anything at all.

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 doesn't exist at all.
I edited /etc/X11/XF86Config to the lines that mine uses for the lcd
monitor. The display card settings seem to know what it is, and I
dropped the default from 24-bit to 16-bit, but it still didn't work.
The display still gets to the blue wave, then dropps to shimmering
white, retries a couple of times, then drops to text mode.

I have edited lilo.conf so that it starts up from the old 9.0, which
at least lets me in for now, but it brings up a lot of errors at boot
up, which I'll have to sort out later.

If I mount /dev/hdc7 as /mnt/temp can I reasonably copy the
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 from the 9.0 setup into the /mnt/temp setup?

It will have to be this afternoon, as I have to go out this morning.
