Aaaah! "ide-scsi" proved to be the last bit of the jigsaw!

Put together with suggestions from Anne, Ronald,Sharrea, Ed, and
Stephen, it's finally working. I now have my USB Epson flat-bed scanner
and SCSI Canon 35mm scanner both accessible under Gimp. :-)))

SCSI-emulation was what was complicating things - the USB controller was
grabbing a scsi host adapter and the CD writer a scsi device before the
genuine scsi hardware ever had a chance to get a look in.

Many thanks, all you folks, for persisting with your help.

P.S. Anne, I've revised my Canon 2700F and added AHA152x entries to SCSI
in the Twiki
