I'm using gmplayer to play back the video (video/x-ms-asf) and it works fine. My only complaint is while the clip is downloading I can't use my pc - it locks up. I've also tried mplayer. I have control of my pc during the download but not during the playback.

Is there something I can do, or is this just the way it is (I hope
not!)

Is this in a browser window using the plugin? And when you say "locks up", you mean the keyboard and mouse don't respond at all? If it is in a browser window, which browser?

I'm using Mozilla, and it has under Helper Applications for mime type video/x-ms-asf to open with /usr/bin/gmplayer. Yes, by "locks up" I mean I can't do anything but wait. Well, ALT-TAB brings up the box with the open applications but nothing happens when I let go of the keys other than the box goes away - regardless of which icon was highlighted when I let go.

Does netflix let you download the movie *without* playing it in the browser?

No. Here's what the help on their site says:

"System Requirements
To view streaming previews on NetFlix, you need Microsoft's Windows Media Player installed on your computer. To download the latest version of Windows Media Player, visit the Microsoft Web site by clicking the icon below."

those b*st*rds ;-) Video plays great in gmplayer -- it's the waiting that's the problem.

I went there to try it but it looks like I gotta go through
some reg process before they'll let me try it, man I hate that...
