Now it seems to be the other way round. Although it has an old-fashioned look I personally have always got on well with xcdroast, and my ide drive is also my dvd drive. Everything functions well as it is, so I have no intentions of upsetting anything by using scsi-em with that drive - it simply isn't worth it.
Anyway, that's probably irrelevant to this thread. I just wanted to suggest that it was worth looking at xcdroast, since if that does work it rules out some possible causes, like problems with the basic burning packages.
