I'll take a stab, since I'm supposed to be an MCSE... ;-)

In a Windows domain, as opposed to workgroup, there is a Domain
Master Browser which controls the network directory structure and/or
routes to shares. If there is more than one "domain controller", the
network will occasionally hold "elections" to decide who is the
Master Browser, based on conditions I now forget.

If you are not running a domain, no such elections would take place,
and even if you were running a domain, the Samba server would need
to be configured as a domain controller, not simply a file and print
server.

How'd I do?

not bad. what you said brought back memories of my NT server class in college. Don't remember much from the class,

I mostly remember doing nasty broadcasts using "net send" and playing
Freecell...

yeah...I spent a lot of time ribbin the instructor about Windows vs. Linux and the fact that the way NT wants one to do things was more work then it needed to be. What takes him 10 boxes to do I can with one and still have plenty of resources left over to play games on, program and compile, and take care of server stuff.
