Dhcp works good too,,, but my bet would be your problem is in the gateway statement make sure you have gateway set on your ME machine to be the IP of the linux servers eth0 card, and to be 0.0.0.0 for the box doing the dialup, as the gateway will change as soon as ppp starts a connection and gets and IP from the ISP servers.
