Sorry- missed that you said cut worked OK- that would indicate the buffer is
saving stuff OK. I've little experience with Gnome, and have been on Gentoo
for 3 months, waiting for MDK9.2 to get it together. But I do know Mandrake
and KDE very well. Are you using 9.1? Was there always this problem, or did
it suddenly occur? What's the Gnome equivalent to kde klipper? Does c/p
failure occur when using another window manager? If so, what I would try with
an RPM distro, is remove Gnome while in init 3 or another environment like
kde, reboot to init 3 or kde, and then reinstall Gnome. With kde, when you do
stuff like that, you always rename your ~/.kde folder first to kde.old, so
you can replace your mail, and konqueror settings.

However, investigate everything else first, before taking that drastic step.
We need a Gnome expert to chime in here about the c/p problem!

Two other tips for non-command line experts linux types who run into serious
problems (myself included):

1. If drive room permits, always install kde AND Gnome, so you can repair and
investigate things easier with a GUI.
2. Get a Knoppix cd, and learn how to use it as a rescue boot disk, with it's
kde environment. I did my Gentoo install with this, and have bailed out of
several seeming impossible situtations for a command line amateur! (Of
course, for experts, it would have been easy at a CLI, if you had the
background and required knowledge).
