Just in case I wrote it so that it could not be understood, the above is the 
way that it works again now. I had not tried the command cdrecord -scanbus 
when it wasn't working. Should it ever happen again I certainly will. I have 
never had any problems with k3b recognising my drives. I think I must own 
this mistake by *not* changing the drive in /etc/lilo.conf, as has been 
pointed out to me.

K3b has always worked, and worked a treat on any machine that i have installed 
it on, until I fooled round with that crook drive and changing them and their 
jumpers round. Not making the appropriate changes in lilo?
