I was using Picassa the other say and it had them sorted newest on top, but each folder was sorted with the old ones first. This may sound odd, but it makes a lot of sense. The newest pictures are shown first but you also in the order you took them, which makes sense. My preference would be to have newest pictures on top with a horizontal separator between each month or so. Inside each month the oldest pictures are first but the months are sorted new to old.
