At Solo speeds, one can tolerate things sticking out that produce a little drag. Put a metal filler neck and and a cap from a passenger car gas tank on your F500.
If you have to, use some bent tubes and hoses to route it out.

You could also get rid of that behind-the -eat cell and put a small tank or bottle in a side pod.

What pissed me off about it was having to take the mirrors off to get the body off, and then having no way to realign them when I put them back on.

I'd take that aluminum seat out and make a foam seat. It'd mean you'd lay down more, using the fuel cell can as the back rest, but it'd be worth it. Then you'd have to close that top area above the cell, but that should be closed anyway. You can make the new panel attach with dzus fasterners for easy fueling.
