Quite true.
I've seen Mk7's in both the narrow and wide cockpit. I have two of the
latter, one a '93 (#13) and the other a '95 (#20). My molded seat fits the
same in both, all suspension pieces bolt up on both, the body fit is the
same, and the engine bay is quite similar if not identical. My Mk5 was a
narrow cockpit (I needed no molded seat). There ARE some subtle difference
I encountered in doing the old "mix 'n match" between my two Mk7 chassis:
- The bolt holes for the motor plate are not even close
- Body mount tabs are off by ~1" in some areas.
- I discovered a difference of < .25" in some crossmembers whereas others
were "spot on."
- The slip joint in the carrier that ties the rear axle to the frame and
carries the drive belt/gears is of different diameter and may use a
different size rod end.
As can be discerned, there's nothing here that could be debilitating when
swapping frames unless you are a big dude.

I can add a bit of info about the Mk7 and Mk8.
I have one of the last Mk7's (#26) and it was homologated 4/95.
I also have the a Mk8 (#1) and it was homologated 12/95.
I've seen many Mk7's and there are slight variations in all that I've
seen. Most of the variations seem to be in the rear suspension (track
locator types), jackshafts, and also the width of the driver's seating
area. I remember Mike Keirns telling me that my Mk7 was a "wide-body"
version. (It didn't fit my wide body very well until I recently had the
side bars cut out...this is an autocross only car).

1990-1992 - Mk 5
1993-1995 - Mk 7
1996-2000 - Mk 8
Mk 8.5 was an update.
