Actually theory and "seat of the pant's impressions" of torque and HP can be
reconciled.
More HP should mean both more acceleration and more top end, but torque
(force) is actually what is moving the car at any one instant. More HP means
that more torque is available longer, but you may have to lower the final
drive and shift more often with some motors to realize the benefit. MC
motors are a great example. Also see the other site discussions on L98 vs
LT1 motors.
You probably went faster in the 1/8 mile after you dropped your final drive
since you could use more shifts to stay near the HP peak better over the
distance traveled.
Alternatively, if they had been available at the time, going to a 5 or 6
speed tranny with a lower rear end for the quarter mile might have helped
you there too by allowing you to stay near the HP peak more.
