Hi Dave, I am NOT trying to eliminate the CVT at all.  I will continue to use 
it.  I am
trying to open up the class to more competitors with an ALTERNATIVE engine 
package.

Heartily concur.

Order a catalog from Taylor Race Engineering in Plano.  Check some of those
prices.  There is virtually nothing in that catalog that our cars require.
If that doesn't cure you, order a Truesports catalog and check out their
prices for shocks and springs.  Check those prices before you continue your
pursuit of introducing gearboxes, shocks, sway bars, differentials and other
such financial madness (don't forget the lubrication and service of said
items).  If you REALLY want the expenditure of purchasing and the nightmare
of tuning those items on your car, NO PROBLEM.  EVERY other road racing
class and almost every other solo class uses those pieces.

Before you dismiss the CVT drive train, remember; this technology is
OUTLAWED in F1.  Why is it outlawed?  Because teams began tinkering with CVT
and found that they could employ it with a distinct advantage over
gearboxes.  F1 rules are as close to a fully automated driveline as their
current rules allow.  Remember, also, that several car manufacturers are now
offering CVT as an option.  Do I like shifting gears?  Sure!  It's fun.
However, it is inefficient, expensive, and time consuming.  After all,
aren't we all in the pursuit of speed?

For those who wish to remain within the simplicity of what our current rules
stipulate, keep the promotion of the class in your "cross hairs."  One of
the factors affecting the drop in car counts is the economy.  ALL car counts
are down (yes, even SM and SRF).  Why does it not affect them as much?
Easy.  Have you ever noticed the REQUIRED tow rig for those cars?  Tools?
Spares?  Trailer? For either class, all that is needed is the wife's 4Runner
and a single axle trailer, and a two drawer tool box.  THAT is their TRUE
advantage.  All of their maintenance (and associated expenditures) is
completed away from the track.  (When is the last time you saw someone
changing a SM engine at the track?)  Once they arrive, it either runs or it
doesn't.  Except for changing tires and pulling out fenders, there is little
else to do.

Formula cars (INCLUDING ours) are high maintenance.  That is part of the
game.  There is not one class of formula cars that I have not seen stripped
naked with some "casually dressed" person bent over with a wrench in their
hand, going at it.  It's what we do.
