Pocono Race Report, Great weather both race days, turnout less than the last
two years among all classes. Race was run with FF and FV both days.
Sat race started the Fords and 500's together as qualified with Brent in 4th
position, Jim Schultz in 8th and the rest of us spread from 10th-19th.The
rest of us qualified 1.1 sec.apart..... Hmmmm. could get interesting. I felt
a little outnumbered as I had the only Red Devil VS. "The Invader Nation "
in the field ( Andrew , where are you ? ) Green flag FINALLY dropped after
two aborted starts ( FF guys trying to get a jump ) and everyone went clean
thru one, race finally strung out enough and everyone eas having their own
private battles. Dave Lapham had a fast car ( very fast without brakes !)
and retired early as did Ernie Churchill.
The Faster Fords could outpull most of us on the straights ( Mike B got a
tow and reported 134 mph + on front straight) we could outbrake they into
one and in the left hander before " Devils Elbow" and before the chicane. So
the race went: divebomb into, ( take your pick, one, lefthander,or chicane)
and try to build enough of a lead so you wouldn't get sucked up by the end
of the straight. This went on for 7-8 laps then we caught the Vees, Whopee!
moving chicanes! Race was Red Flagged with one to go when Mike B and Steven
Maxwell FF got together going into one, FF climbed left side of 500 and
according to a corner worker I talked with at the social that eve " Launched
12-15' up before coming down on nose and left front, cartwheeling again
until roll bar dug in, driver walked away and was taken in for observation.
Final standings as below,Mike 3rd overall, Jim 6th,Tom and myself 10th and
11th with Steven Thompson and Tom Lapham running at the end for5th and 6th
in class.
Now the fun began, Mike Q and Frank put on a clinic at the Invader garage
in " body and fiberglass repair".Should of taped it and sold it for an
infomercial.
The Lapham brothers were also busy changing shock rubbers, brakes etc, etc.
the biggest difference is that Q is fueled by beer ( any brand, just cold)
while the Lapham boys prefer Red wine ( in a glass, thank you) but anyone in
their stalls were never to busy to take the time to answer my 100th
question, a trait that runs thru the F5 community.
Sunday we decided that a split start ( FF in front with 500's and Vees a
couple hundred yards back ) would benefit all . The problem is that at
Pocono the starters stand is soooo far away its tough to see, I suspect that
a few of us ( David, Steven T,) may of had radios, or that Tom S and myself
were sleeping, anyway when we finally woke up everyone had passed and it was
on. First corner clean again with the driving slightly more aggressive than
on Sat. but good clean ,respectful racing. Mike, Jim and Dave ran away from
the rest of us, leaving Tom and myself for a many battle to last many laps.
Tom L and Steven T both went off in turn two at the beginning of 2nd ? lap.
Brent set another track record and in the process even had time to do a loop
into two and kiss the rail and still finish first ! Tom and I traded places
a few times with my car pulling better on the straights and his better in
the turns. I thought i had him set up with 1 to go, as we enteren one for
the last time my car quit. Rolled to a stop in two, got out watied for rope
tow after checkers, when a spectator asked me if I had shut the master
switch off ( I hadn't and neither had the corner worker ) I got back in put
the key back in the master turned it and had power and drove back to the
pits. When we mounted the switch this spring we put it on with the key in
the "off" position, flat of course when you turn it on the key is " up" into
the wind, drag and an occasional piece of tire "marble" I told Tom
Shaughnessy about it in impound afterword, he smiled and said " luck 'o the
Irish" got to be good for something !! We are now mounting the key in the
flat " on" position, lesson learned. That's it from Pocono.
