I recently was told by an engineer friend that Costco - the discount
warehouse people - now offer to fill your tires with nitrogen as part of a
new service program designed to increase your gas milage and make your tires
live longer !

Joe, defiantly better that regular air, but I think nitro still has less
moisture content and the inert factor helps also, along with the "big"
molecule theory.

As far as leakage, the gas molecules would have to be larger in order to
leak out less easily.
It's a combination of the effects you mention.
1 - Water vapor - any dry gas will work better than regular air with
water
vapor. As the vapor condenses, the pressure drops, and as the temperature
rises, the pressure increases radically. Since there is a state change
involved, it doesn't follow the ideal gas law (PV=nRT)
2 - Nitrogen is effectively inert for our purposes, while O2 and H2 are
reactive, along with some of the other oddball compounds in generic air.
3 - N2 is a larger molecule than H2, CO, or He.
