With a conventional tach like the kroeber, it connects to the  
lighting coil in parallel with the voltage regulator. When I  
installed a Digatron a few years ago, I couldn't get the tach to work  
reliably because the regulator created transients. Digatron  
recommended a series resistor in place of the regulator and I added a  
simple low pass filter on the tach input. Both tach operation and  
charging of the battery have been very reliable in autocross. We are  
in Ohio for thanksgiving; when we get back to Massacusetts in a few  
days, I can probably dig up a wiring diagram if you are interested.
