Steve, I don't understand what is breaking or wearing out on your fasteners. Every race car I have ever worked on for the last 20 years has used them. Once in a while you might have the hole enlarge on the fastener part, but careful use of a small end punch will put it right again.
If they are coming out of the fiberglass, you may want to use a backing washer to give the rivet head a larger holding surface. Don't use steel pop rivets. They put too much pressure on the fiberglass and will cause it to crack or split. Also the expanding part of the rivet must be on the side with the metal. Trying to expand the rivet into the fiberglass will result in a poor joint and it will not hold. As a final touch, I peen over the expanded end of the rivet with a small ball peen hammer. This produces a smooth finish and guaranties that the rivet will never fall out. Also offset (rotationally) the spring and latch rivets so they don't hit each other.
