Subject: RE: [F500] racecar shipping

Chris,

I just went to the KartShip website and saw a major red flag. They are just
a
middle man and sub out the actual shipping. This is not unusual, but caused me
a huge problem when I shipped an Alfa Spider a few years ago. The sub shipper
damamged the car and "went bankrupt" before I could get paid for the damage.
It
took me a year of calls, letters, threats, and tracking down the owner of the
defunct sub to get a partial payment. Luckily, the original company I
contracted with eventually paid for the balance of the damage, even though they
didn't have to. I will never ship a vehicle again unless the company I
contract
with is responsible for any damamge.

I have no reason to think that KartShip is not totally legit, but I thought
this feedback might be helpful to the list.

Cory, another to look at is kartship.com, he was a couple bucks more than
Yellow, but depends on allot of things and may be better for you. He's a real
nice guy and racer, he'll steer you right, pun intended.

You are correct Chuck. Just like everyone else, Don has had a difficult time
finding a good shipping method for his cars since Condolidated Freight went
bust. He no longer uses that shipper and made things right with Greg B.

>From Chris R.'s feedback, Yellow Freight may be a good solution. I plan to
investigate that simultaneously with FedEx Freight and keep the list updated on
my experience. It will be a good thing for the class if the manufacturers have
a
shipper they can count on to deliver their cars.

As I recall, the Brannon's had a HORROR story about Don shipping their new
Red Devil from MT to Orlando several years ago as 'Car Parts'. Carrier
damaged the crate and had to open it.....jacked the freight bill up to
encompass 'Automobile' and the fee went from about $800 to $3K. I
understand there was additional haggling and eventually the Brannon's were
able to take delivery of the car and all the unassembled pieces.

Since this topic is hot - Don Hanley and I have been working on shipping my
new Red Devil roller from Butte, MT to Memphis, TN. I had a very
preliminary discussion with FedEx Freight about shipping a "crate of car
parts". The prelim estimate that they gave me was around $650. That was
commercial location to commercial location, with no lift required for pick
up or delivery. They will go residential on one end only for a fee, and
send trucks with lifts for an additional fee.

I called them in Dec, so the price was before their most recent increase.
I also need to get a lot of details straight with them before I'm confident
that I know the true cost. I'm planning to call them again in the next few
weeks and will post again once I have more info.

It really sucks that Consolidated Freight went bust.
