SEB,
As one of the three writers of the original rules establishing F Modified years
ago, I have seen what we worked so hard at making a level playing field between
the F440/500's and the Solo Vee's go away as the F440/500's improved over the
years while the Solo Vee's did not. In general, I believe that that this
proposed group of changes goes WAY too far and too fast into unknown territory
in favor of the Solo Vee's as the SV's are not THAT far behind in times over
the last several Nationals.
I really like the introduction of the Formula First cars into the class and
would recommend strongly that its rules be used for the Solo Vee's so that
anything that goes beyond FST's rules should NOT be allowed for Solo Vee's.
And, yes, this means smaller wheels & tires for the SV's which is not a bad
thing for the asphalt surface at Topeka. Thus, the Solo Vee's would eventually
morph into FST's and may be considered later for road racing by their owners,
making them more valuable (ala FF's).
Looking at specific sections, here is what I think:
C.2.u - No, I am against any LSD or locked rear end - the FF's don't have them
then why allow them for SV's?
I suspect the FST's do not have them either.
D.1, D.2 & D.3 - Front & rear suspensions and the braking system - I have no
problem with any of these proposed changes AS LONG AS they do not exceed
FST's rules.
New Section E - If the change exceeds FST rules then I am absolutely AGAINST
it. However, for the other engine changes that are within FST rules, let's
postpone these changes until we see what changes made in D.1, D.2 & D.3 show at
Topeka Nationals over several years.
Remember to not go too far too fast and then later realize that it was a
mistake. I do believe that eventually the Solo Vee's will become FST's for the
most part and that this path will be the most cost effective approach. I also
suspect that several will buy new FST's to run both Solo and Road Racing.
