FWIW, I believe last year the only major difference was that VBB makes less calls to the database per message read than phpBB so it's cheaper to run. That may have been fixed. Both had major security flaws found out last year. In the case of phpBB you need a decent hacker to put mods in, vbb is a little easier to manipulate, but in the end 99% of your users wont be able to tell the difference.
