Because people like the passive nature of a ListServ as opposed to having to actively having to browse and read a Forum.

That may have been fixed.  Both had major security flaws found out last
year.  In the case of phpBB you need a decent hacker to put mods in, vbb is
a little easier to manipulate, but in the end 99% of your users wont be able
to tell the difference.

it sounds like there is already an f500 forum out there, why isnt anyone
using it?
