All,
Below is the note I just sent to the CRB. I am proposing the Rotax 453 for
consideration as the next engine for our class. Based on the 92 hp rating,
there may be some adjustments necessary to slow it down, but I believe it is
our best short term solution for a supply of new engines. If you agree, I
encourage you to:
1. Send a note to the CRB
2. Consider volunteering time or resources for testing of the engine
3. Spread the wod so others will also do #1 and #2.
Thanks, Cory

Subject: Response to Member Advisory - F500 engines

Dear Sirs,
This message is in response to the request from the CRB for feedback on the
"next generation" engine for F500. I have been an active club racer in F500
since 1995, and have participated in 6 Runoffs during that time. Even though
there is a good existing supply of legal Rotax 494 and 493 engines, I believe
that the issue of the availability of engines needs to be addressed now, with
two goals in mind: (1) ensure an ongoing supply of new engines for the class,
and (2) develop a long term engine solution that will foster long-term growth
of the class. My recommendations to achieve the two goals are:
1. The class needs an engine choice that is currently in production, so that
F500 chassis manufacturers can deliver turn key cars and class participants can
easily procure engines without having to scour salvage yards. As a short term
solution, the engine must be compatible with existing chassis (with minor
medications) and the current CVT transmission. For these reasons, I recommend
the Rotax Type 453 engine as the most logical choice to accomplish this goal.
It is currently in production and priced approximately equal to the most
recently available new 493 engines. In order to promote the necessary testing
to determine what performance adjustments would be needed to equalize this
engine with the current engine choices, I will commit to purchasing a 453
engine to be used for performance testing. I am forwarding this message to the
F500 community, in hopes that others will volunteer time and/or resources to
testing the 453 engine. I believe a logical goal would be
to legalize the 453 for regional racing in 2008. In the event that the CRB is
interested in this proposal, I can be contacted at 901-289-3153.
2. There are two differing opinions within the F500 class as to a long term
drivetrain solution that will foster growth in the class: (a) continue with
snowmobile derived drivetrain, or (b) convert to motorcycle derived drivetrain.
I recommend that an ad-hoc committee be formed to study these two long term
directions, and how they may be compatible within one class. With the strong
opinions on both sides of this debate, it will take a while to develop and
support any type of consensus. As such, this can only address a long term
solution, not the immediate need for a supply of new engines.
Thank you for soliciting and considering member input on this critical issue
for F500.
