It is not as practical to measure the crank HP after a motorcycle is assembled with its transmission, but one can measure the HP at the transmission output shaft or at the rear tire. Both will vary with the gear selected, but I reckon that if they can hold it on the dyno rollers, 5th or 6 th gear ought to be pretty efficient.

115 HP is the factory claim stock on a GSXR600 last year. That is crank HP.
1000cc street bikes like Hondas easily make another 8 HP from just a remap and an exhaust. 3 to 5 is a popular figure for 600cc bikes.

Therefore 120 Crank HP, not rear wheel HP, is a nice round figure for the GSXR600 motor with an exhaust and remap. A Honda 600 may have more.

One of the motorcycle track day guys at work is bringing in his copy of the latest magazine shoot-out of the hot 600cc bikes. Worst case rear wheel HP ought to be in the 100 to 110 range.

I really think 120 is a stretch. I will try to put my new GSXR 600 on the
dyno sometime in the next couple of months.

Thanks ... Jay Novak

Chuck,

I have been told by a good friend who is no longer in this sport that he
dyno'd his 494 Rotax in the 92 to 95 HP range at the rear wheels. Of course,
that may vary somewhat depending on one's tune. I don't think anyone is at
100 HP, but I could be wrong :-).

Perhaps others might want to share their results with this list :-).

I'd agree that 120HP is a good figure for now on a gas rord race GSXR600
motor for comparison since the motors are already very well developed from
the factory.

Does anyone have any argument that 100 HP is a good HP to use for comparison
on the well sorted and piped Rotaxes currently?

These are all crank HP-not HP at the tranny output shaft or at the ground.

It ought to be interesting to watch the passes on the straights :->
