The 27th SEDIV Double National was conducted at Roebling Road Raceway at Savannah, GA June 29-30 & July 1. The first session on Friday was qualifying for Saturday's race. The second session on Friday was qualifying for Sunday's race. The 5 Formula 500 participants had uneventful sessions. Saturday morning was a qualifying session for Saturdays race. The big event of Saturday was the seizing of a crankshaft bearing on the #34 McMahan entry. The McMahan's brought both their #34 and the #25 of Jay Stroud for Clint and Tom Hastings to trade during the event. Clint to drive the #25 on Saturday and the #34 on Sunday. The engine was changed without difficulty and 5 F500's took the green flag for the Noon start of the Group 1 race. Major moment of the race was when Clint McMahan and Jim Elder touched wheels in turn one with Jim getting caught in the gravel trap for about 4 laps, having to exit the car and assist the workers in pulling it free and then getting back in and rejoining the race. Jim Elder Sunday mornings qualifying session had the occasion of Clint McMahan in the #34 and Greg Riehle coming together at the exit of turn 2. Both cars suffered damage, Greg suffered a bent up front brake rotor mounting hat on his Sidewinder and without a spare on hand had to call it a day. McMahan suffered a bent rear axle, without a spare on hand. The bent axle was removed from the car, straightened on a press and reinstalled on the car, just in time the the Noon start. Shortly after the start Tom Hastings's had the snap ring holding the clevis pin for the brake pedal come loose and the clevis pin worked it's way out of the pedal assembly....NO BRAKES. The big incident of the race was when Tom had a coming together with a Formula Ford exiting the Carousel on the next to last lap, parking both cars. Finish Order 1. Clint McMahan 2. Bob Berman 3.
