The 27th SEDIV Double National was conducted at Roebling Road Raceway at
Savannah, GA June 29-30 & July 1. The first session on Friday was
qualifying for Saturday's race. The second session on Friday was qualifying
for Sunday's race. The 5 Formula 500 participants had uneventful sessions.

Saturday morning was a qualifying session for Saturdays race. The big event
of Saturday was the seizing of a crankshaft bearing on the #34 McMahan
entry. The McMahan's brought both their #34 and the #25 of Jay Stroud for
Clint and Tom Hastings to trade during the event. Clint to drive the #25 on
Saturday and the #34 on Sunday. The engine was changed without difficulty
and 5 F500's took the green flag for the Noon start of the Group 1 race.
Major moment of the race was when Clint McMahan and Jim Elder touched wheels
in turn one with Jim getting caught in the gravel trap for about 4 laps,
having to exit the car and assist the workers in pulling it free and then
getting back in and rejoining the race.

Finish Order

3. Tom Hastings

Sunday mornings qualifying session had the occasion of Clint McMahan in the
#34 and Greg Riehle coming together at the exit of turn 2. Both cars
suffered damage, Greg suffered a bent up front brake rotor mounting hat on
his Sidewinder and without a spare on hand had to call it a day. McMahan
suffered a bent rear axle, without a spare on hand. The bent axle was
removed from the car, straightened on a press and reinstalled on the car,
just in time the the Noon start. Shortly after the start Tom Hastings's had
the snap ring holding the clevis pin for the brake pedal come loose and the
clevis pin worked it's way out of the pedal assembly....NO BRAKES. The big
incident of the race was when Tom had a coming together with a Formula Ford
exiting the Carousel on the next to last lap, parking both cars.

As is traditional the event was stinking HOT and the Sand Gnats were out in
abundance. Untraditionally, there was no afternoon Gully Washer.
