I do seem to have 1.7.3 installed on the system I did most of my Fabric hacking on, but I don't recall offhand if I am using 1.7.x specific features -- that could be the case, though.
If you're able and willing to upgrade your paramiko, that'd be a good first step to see if that's the issue here.
