As far as I know, the code should still work. The reason it got moved to unmaintained was that we couldn't build the PDF library it uses reliably on all machines in our build farm. Long-term, a better solution would be to use Cairo for PDF rendering. The PDF library used by unmaintained/pdf is itself unmaintained, IIRC, and requires special patches to build on Mac OS X, for example.
