What they mean is when you first clone a repository you get a default
branch called 'master'. And this is the default checked out branch.
It's possible to go off into 'not currently on a branch' but using git
reset with an id that isn't a branch.
I don't remember whether I changed this. I could start over: save my two
modified stock files and reclone the remote repo, to see that I am on the
master branch by default.
