Great questions. I think we in the West for the most part only know about "world renowned" gurus because those are the only ones we hear about over here. I'm sure there are many powerful, completely unknown gurus in the East. Different dharma strokes for different folks. I know when Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was asked why he worked so hard traveling around the world teaching he said that the last time he was here, he didn't do very much. He also said that this is his 7th incarnation.
