Its ritualistic, so is the puja. To me, my experience is that both are
wonderful and have quite an effect. 

And just taking the ritualistic nature of them, by themselves, I find
can be quite intriguing and charming, if not beautiful. Superstitious
is not the word that comes to my mind.

Some may appear gross, some may be gross, i am sure. Sometimes this is
a cultural difference. The ones I have seen and met are wonderful people.

Ben can speak much more thoroughly on this -- having seen and met many
pundits.
 
Regarding not meditating  -- the pundits are absorbed in mantra 10 or
more hours a day -- whether they close their eyes or not.
