I think the diff between these things and imagination is imagination is a conscious process with a desired outcome, for example I imagine I am walking on the surface of the sun and its really really hot.
These other experiences are literally refinement of the senses, just like MMY said; clearing specific channels for specific results. And I don't believe it is possible to force the experience. Also when I have such experiences, the experience has a life or a consciousness of its own, to wit not talking to angels, or them flying or floating in a certain way. No I never saw gravity, but I have seen the atomic structure of objects and people. Coming out of TM once, a table and a human being both made of the same vibrating steel grey bb's, then as I became aware of what I was seeing, the covering of texture and color that made the table wood and the human being flesh seemed to leap from my eyes and cover both objects, proving scientifically that everything is made of the same undifferentiated quanta of energy. Of course at the time (1992 or 3) my reaction was something like, wow was that cool! which is pretty much my consistent reaction ongoing... Maharishi has always said keep the attention on the highest first, and that's what I do. It has been good advice.
