Mantras are a vehicle. They are particular sounds found down through
the centuries to be conducive to meditation. That's why though Benson
thought one could meditate on any old word he didn't pick up much
support in other Indian paths of meditation as they already knew that
but only specific mantras were safe to use and other words had already
been shown even though they calmed the mind to produce insanity over time.
