These kinds of slurs *become* important when they're used to destroy a candidate who might well be able to do something about the important stuff if he or she were elected. That's absurd and highly unfortunate, but it's a fact of life these days. We would almost certainly be in the last year of Al Gore's second term if it hadn't been for stories started by right-wingers and promoted endlessly by the media about his alleged "serial prevarication," almost all of which was made up out of whole cloth.
