These kinds of slurs *become* important when
they're used to destroy a candidate who might
well be able to do something about the important
stuff if he or she were elected. That's absurd
and highly unfortunate, but it's a fact of life
these days.

We would almost certainly be in the last year
of Al Gore's second term if it hadn't been for
stories started by right-wingers and promoted
endlessly by the media about his alleged "serial
prevarication," almost all of which was made up
out of whole cloth. (He never said he had
invented the Internet, just for one example.)
